This recipe was originally from 2011-01-20[@rev]and the original lentil version is from 2013-03-18[@rev]. Note that a key to this recipe is a long, slow simmer. I wouldn't skip this step!
2/3 pound lean ground beef --OR-- ~3/4 cup dry lentils
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon prepared yellow mustard
3/4 cup ketchup
3 teaspoons brown sugar or splenda (or a mix)
salt to taste
ground black pepper to taste
Other seasonings to taste (Sriracha, crushed red pepper, chipotle powder, etc)
Balsamic Vinegar to taste
In a medium skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef (if using beef), onion, and green pepper; drain off liquids. If using lentils, simmer in 1.5 cups water (2:1 ratio) for about 15 minutes. Drain water and add lentils to the onions
Stir in the garlic powder, mustard, ketchup, and brown sugar; mix thoroughly. Reduce heat, and simmer for 30 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
